We Found A Lucky Penny

What we know of Penny is that she is a little over a year old, and - according to the vet - was probably the mother of a litter or two before she found herself at Ginger’s Pet Rescue.  Her original owner had been in the process of retiring/moving and was not able to care for her dogs.  I don’t know how many foster families Penny had stayed with, but her last foster family had all wonderful things to say about her.

I knew the moment D walked passed this little girl that things were going to be a little different for us.  We had always talked about adding another furry friend to our family (down the road, of course) but the opportunity had presented itself to us.  We had to consider it a gift.

Along with our new dog comes a basket-full of essential items for suitable living.

First things first, a bath was in order.  Penny doesn't quite enjoy bath time as well as Luna (*YET* hahaha),  but she seems to do very well with the drying off part – as a matter of fact, she uses some of the same methods as Luna – like rolling and sliding on pillows and rugs.  Next was a visit to our Vet’s office.  She has a mild yeast infection in her ears (not uncommon in floppy-eared dogs), weighs 14.4 lbs, and has very clean teeth for a Dachshund.

Penny is not used to being in a crate, and she exhibits a little bit of separation anxiety (I don’t blame her). D and I are re-introducing the crate to her as a safe place to be – first step is to give her treats and/or her food inside her crate, so she knows that good things are associated with it. Next, we make sure she spends short amount of time in there while we do various things around the house – like eat dinner or clean up.

In the mean time, Penny loves, Loves, LOVES to be in our laps, and will follow us all around the house.  It’s certainly been fun having two dogs greet me when I get home.

We are beginning to gain an appreciation for the difficulty of walking two very differently-sized dogs. Two Goldens? No problem! Two Dachshunds? Bring it on! One Golden and one Dachsie? Not so simple!

I grew up with a Doxie...they are wonderful companions! I keep saying I'm going to get a smaller pup, that I can hold in my lap! Of course, Buddy sits in my lap now!
